What will they crowdfund next?

Raising funds through crowdsourcing has become de rigueur for art projects worldwide, from small non-profits to major public institutions (the Royal Academy recently raised £123,577 via Kickstarter to bring Ai Weiwei’s monumental Tree sculptures to London). But in an eyebrow-raising move, a London-based art fair has also resorted to crowdfunding. The 1:54 contemporary African art fair launches its fourth edition next month at Somerset House (15-18 October). But there is a slight setback. “Please support us in the printing of our exhibition catalogues!” implores an email from the organisers. Funds are indeed needed to produce the catalogue which “is dedicated to promoting our exhibitors and artists, many of whom have never been in print before. Our catalogue contains the work of over 150 African and African diasporan artists,” according to the campaign’s Kickstarter page. 1:54 needs to raise £5,000 by 12 October (pledge £60 and you’ll receive a day ticket to the fair and... an exhibition catalogue which retails at £15.00).
