Visitors walking on the south bank of the River Thames may see fuller-figured gentlemen and two small children bobbing in the water near Vauxhall bridge. Fear not though—these figures form part of a sculptural installation on the foreshore by the UK artist Jason deCaires Taylor (The Rising Tide), which will be visible during low tide (they are submerged otherwise in the murky water). “The corpulent businessmen astride two horses represent the position of power over these resources. Their counterparts are two small children depicting future generations that will live with the consequences of overconsumption,” says a project statement. The potent piece is part of the mammoth Nine Elms business and residential development which runs from Lambeth Bridge to Battersea Power Station. The installation, part of the Totally Thames arts initiative, will remain in situ during September.
