There’s a new regime at The Burlington Magazine, the august London-based art periodical founded in 1903. Frances Spalding, professor of art history at Newcastle University, takes the reins from 17 September, succeeding Richard Shone who is retiring after 12 years as editor. She says in a statement: “The Burlington Magazine rests on an impressive bedrock of history and achievement, while also taking advantage of the digital age.” Spalding is a Bloomsbury Group specialist, with biographies of Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Roger Fry under her belt (Fry, incidentally, was joint editor of the monthly magazine from 1909 to 1918).
