Pretty Polly to proclaim environmental truths at PAMM

The Dutch artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) have enlisted the help of some live feathered friends for a new installation commissioned by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), due to open on 13 August. Two domestic African grey parrots and two Amazon parrots—all coming from the same private owner—will spend their days in a specially-conceived aviary in a gallery space of PAMM’s lobby, where a recording of T.S. Eliot’s poem The Wasteland will play. The project, called Speechless, deals with “environmental issues and the terminology we use to discuss them”, says a spokeswoman for the museum, and if all goes to plan, the parrot performance artists will echo Eliot’s words. Meanwhile, sculptures of letters scattered throughout the aviary will spell out terms like “rising sea levels”. The parrots plan to stay in the museum until 21 February—but thankfully will be given alternative accommodation at PAMM for the evening.
