Miami art fairs are like the many-headed Hydra: get rid of one and two will sprout in its place. The co-founders of Select, the four-year-old contemporary art fair with editions in Miami and New York, are ending their partnership to launch their own events in Miami this December. Brian Whiteley plans to organise a series of installations and performances at vacant waterfront properties along Collins Avenue in North Beach, including an abandoned steakhouse, pharmacy and an outdoor art deco amphitheatre (Satellite, 1-6 December). Whiteley has teamed up with Art Market Productions, the company behind the Seattle Art Fair, according to Artnet News. His former partner Matthew Eck is taking a more traditional route. Eck’s new venture X Contemporary (1-6 December), located a block away from Art Miami in Midtown, will offer dedicated exhibition space to galleries as well as a separate performance and music programme. During its brief run, Select developed a reputation for ambitious interdisciplinary programmes and hosted performances by Rashaad Newsome, Mykki Blanco and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo.
