Art world enjoys Harlem renaissance

Gavin Brown’s Enterprise is moving to a former brewery in Harlem, at 461 West 126th Street. The neighbourhood has been undergoing gentrification as property prices spiral elsewhere further north on the island, and the art community has been paying attention. Brown’s new space is just a mile from a former church that now belongs to the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, who plans to create a cultural community centre of sorts. Brown will move out of his longstanding home on Greenwich Street in the West Village, and will open three floors of exhibition space in Harlem, beginning with an exhibition dedicated to the works of artist Ed Atkins in September, according to the New York Times. Brown has been quietly expanding over the past two years; he opened in Rome in April; took a second-floor space in the Lower East Side in November 2014; and partnered with the artist Laura Owens to open a project space in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles in 2013.
