A yurt dedicated to the film-maker Kenneth Anger, Bhangra beats courtesy of the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band, and a vivid (eye-watering) smoke performance from Olaf Breuning were among the treats served up by Californian artist Doug Aitken at the opening of his arts extravaganza, Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening, last night (26 June) at the Barbican in London. Movers and shakers from across the cultural sector were keen to get down and chill out at Aitken’s “living exhibition” comprising 100 free arts events taking place over 30 days (27 June-26 July). Aitken is mixing it up—no two days will be the same, though some parts will run for the duration of Station to Station, including Aitken’s awesome road-trip movie composed of 62 one-minute films shot during a 4,000-mile train ride across the US during the summer of 2013. Another regular slot is taken by the artist Marcus Coates who has taken up a “residency” at the event. “Come and pose a question to Coates and watch as he attempts to answer you with a painting,” the organisers say. But certain questions posed at the private view—including “Why don’t I fall asleep when I’m tired?” and “Am I a typical Aires?”—may prove particularly challenging to capture on canvas.
