Let’s hope that collectors and curators don’t get too merry at the Roth Bar, a fully functioning, specially crafted watering hole installed in the lobby of Basel’s Les Trois Rois hotel. This cornucopia of cocktails, paint cans and disco balls comes courtesy of Björn, Oddur and Einar Roth, the son and grandsons of the late Swiss artist Dieter Roth. He liked the concept of the “bar” so much that he insisted Hauser & Wirth install one in his first show with the gallery in the late 1990s. But why bother creating a boozy, bright art bar? “You can have a good time in them; bars are a place for friendships, where people are much more honest,” says the artist’s proud grandson Oddur. We can safely assume, then, that salacious art-world gossip will flow freely this week in the quirky and sumptuous surroundings of the Roth Bar.
