The Walker Art Center’s Internet Cat Video Festival returns for its fourth instalment this summer, and we know one frisky feline who is excited. Well, not so much excited as existentially satisfied. Henri le chat noir has deigned to share his thoughts on this year’s festival, due to be held on 13 August in St Paul’s CHS Field, and which will include a new selection of videos curated by Will Braden, Henri’s owner, who is also a film-maker. “A baseball stadium full of people watching cat videos is a good thing. Cats are certainly deserving of your worship,” Henri opines. “Though I would prefer feline representation in Congress, this is a good start.” Speaking to The Art Newspaper, Braden says the festival will have some new features, including “best of” clips from the past three years and fresh “interludes” between each prize category, such as “cats versus bananas”—a formidable comic pairing if ever we’ve heard one. Braden says the biggest challenge has been to find the hidden gems in the vast world of cat videos, but as a natural polyglot, he has learned the words for “cat” and “funny” in around 20 different languages, which is an indispensible aide in his YouTube research. So, besides the viral stars that everyone might be familiar with, festival-goers can expect to be treated to some unknown kitty talent from far-flung countries. Tickets to the event are available on the Walker’s website.
