Too Select, even for VIPs

If a ticket says “VIP” and everyone has a ticket, is anyone still a VIP? That was the metaphysical conundrum plaguing guests at the opening of the Sel ect art fair on Wednesday night. As the line lengthened down West 22nd Street, bouncers denied throngs of invitees from entering, despite protests from exhibitors. “I’ve already lost two collectors, you need to let people in!” shrieked one dealer from inside the doorway. “That guy in the black hat is the sponsor of the show,” said another, pointing to a man in the crowd. “He needs to be inside.” Those who did manage to gain access found a rather scant crowd milling about the booths and watching Sonic Youth co-founder Lee Ranaldo writhing on the floor with his guitar. Next year, organisers might want to rethink their official hashtag: #YouAreSelect.
