The New York-based art dealer Alexander Khochinskiy is challenging his extradition from the US after Polish authorities accused him of illegally owning Antoine Pesne’s painting Girl with a Dove (1754), which was looted by the Nazis during the Second World War. A Polish judge ordered Khochinskiy’s arrest and extradition in 2012, which led US authorities to arrest the dealer in February. Khochinskiy was later released on a $100,000 bond. In April, Khochinskiy filed papers in a Manhattan federal court which sought to dismiss the extradition complaint. His lawyers claim that, under Russian law, the dealer rightfully owns the painting through inheritance from his late father and that it can only be returned to Poland if Khochinskiy is offered fair compensation and the return is authorised by Russia. The arguments on Khochinskiy’s motion are scheduled for 8 May.
