Family connection adds value to Vautrin’s designs

Christie’s in Paris is to hold a dedicated sale of a collection belonging to Marie-Laure Bonnaud-Vautrin, the only child of the mid-20th century decorative artist Line Vautrin. The sale (20 May) comprises nearly 250 objects created by Vautrin; most were gifts to her daughter, and many have never left her home. “The family provenance adds to the rarity of the pieces, which were often personal,” says Emmanuelle Karsenti, the auction house’s 20th- and 21st-century design specialist. The lots include jewellery, boxes, compacts, pill boxes, sculptures, hats and several of Vautrin’s trademark decorative mirrors. Individual estimates range from €200 to €100,000, within a total estimate of €650,000.
