Baku loves Wim Delvoye—but his tattooed pigs stayed at home

The Belgian artist Wim Delvoye has made headlines by tattooing pigs and selling their skins for around £50,000 each, but his sows are noticeably absent from a show of his recent work (until 27 September) at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan. Leyla Aliyeva, the vice-president of the foundation (and the daughter of Ilham Aliyev, the country’s president), is a fan, describing Delvoye as “one of the most charismatic and provocative artists” in the catalogue. The works on show include Rimowa Classic Flight Multiwheel 971.73.00.4 (2013), a set of aluminium suitcases with wheels, embossed with Persian motifs. “I was surprised how tolerant they were [in Baku],” Delvoye says. “But my tattooed pig skins would not have gone down well.”
