Cheim & Read’s year of women artists

Exhibitions included artists Joan Mitchell, Jenny Holzer and more

A year of exhibitions devoted to female artists is under way at New York’s Cheim & Read gallery—albeit accidentally. “It had not occurred to me that we are only showing art by women artists in our entire 2014 exhibition schedule—Lynda Benglis [left, Untitled, 2013], Pat Steir, Ghada Amer, Joan Mitchell, Jenny Holzer, Louise Bourgeois—but I’m delighted to learn that is the case. We never intended to represent an unusually large number of women artists—only seeking out art that attracted us,” says the gallery’s co-founder John Cheim. “Now, if only MoMA would hang a Joan Mitchell in its permanent AbEx installation—she must certainly be as worthy as Robert Motherwell."
