New York.

Paige Powell, a Los Angeles-based curator, took the photographs in 1983 in her Upper West Side apartment.

The images show the painter lounging on a futon and drawing while watching cartoons. They are due to go on show at the Suzanne Geiss Company gallery in New York (“Jean-Michel Basquiat, Reclining Nude”, 16 January-22 February 2014).

“The photographs provide an intimate look into our private lives while we were together in the early 1980s. They are at once vulnerable and trusting images of our love and the daily life of Jean-Michel Basquiat,” Powell says.

Basquiat held private shows of his paintings and drawings in Powell’s apartment—an early platform for the budding artist. Powell worked for Interview magazine and was instrumental in fostering the relationship between Basquiat and Andy Warhol, the magazine’s founder.
