A previously unpublished list, examined by the journalist Richard Dorment and reproduced for the first time in The Art Newspaper, provides details of the fate of 44 paintings confiscated by the Andy Warhol estate in 1991. These were taken from the executor of the artist’s off-site printer, Rupert Jasen Smith, because it was deemed that they were not the work of Warhol and threatened “the integrity of the [Warhol] market and [his] reputation”. But 12 years later, 35 of the works were authenticated by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board and then sold by Vincent Fremont, the foundation’s chief sales agent, who also served as a consultant to the board. Each work was assigned a number; we publish the full list so that the works’ owners can research their provenance. We also invite any concerned parties to contact us.
