Shanghai
The Chinese-Indonesian collector Budi Tek revealed his vision for, and motivation behind creating, the Yuz Museum, also known as the De Museum, in Shanghai during a panel discussion at Art Basel in June. Due to open next year, it will be housed in a Soviet-designed 8,000 sq. m industrial building in the southern Xuhui District, which is being converted by the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. Tek said he plans to add 12,000 sq. m in a second phase within five years of opening, “and hopefully a third” after that. He said he chose to build the museum in Shanghai partly because “if I’m the first, I will leave my name in the history of art of China”. To fill the vast space, he has bought large-scale works by artists such as Ai Weiwei and Western artists including Maurizio Cattelan.
