An exhibition of Salvador Dalí’s works lent by the Fundacio Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres, northern Spain, to Moscow’s State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in September 2011 helped propel Russian groups to number three among foreign tourists to sites in Catalonia associated with the surrealist artist and his Russian-born wife, Gala. “[Russians] were almost non-existent in 2000,” says Joan Manuel Sevillano Campalans, the foundation’s managing director. “[Their numbers] have been growing steadily to the point that in such a relatively short time they have become really important.” Dalí met Gala, his muse and future wife, in 1929 and they married in 1934.
