An archive of 500 photographs of California and New Mexico murals, some of which no longer survive, will soon be available on the Getty Research Institute’s (GRI) website. The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), in collaboration with the GRI and mural artists, has created an inventory of images of murals taken between 1973 and 1983 by amateur photographer Ernest Long. He donated digital copies of his photographs in 2007 but the real push to get them online came this summer. “If these murals cannot be conserved because of the current economic climate, then at least we can document them,” said Leslie Rainer from the GCI. As we went to press, the Getty said that the archive would be online within a month.
