Private collectors everywhere are bypassing museums and opening their own spaces. The latest is Spanish businessman Manuel Alorda and his wife Hanneke Derksen (above) who have opened a 250 sq. metre gallery in Barcelona. Mr Alorda, who founded the garden furniture company Kettal in 1966, began buying contemporary art over 40 years ago and has since amassed works by Antonio Tàpies, Miquel Barceló, Anselm Kiefer, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Gabriel Orozco and Anish Kapoor. “The gallery will show the best works we can find, either from our holdings or from other collections,” says Mr Alorda’s daughter, Laura. The inaugural exhibition is of works on loan from other collectors. Mr Alorda’s Kettal firm has funded the E600,000 cost of building the gallery. The company will also pay for the running costs of the new space which is open to the public three days a week. The businessman will co-curate future exhibitions with his four children
