The Moderna Museet in Stockholm has received SEK3m ($400,000) from the art collectors Lena and Per Josefsson to purchase work by women artists. In May, the museum asked the Swedish government for SEK50m ($6.8m) to expand its holdings of early 20th-century works by women (The Art Newspaper, June 2006, p26). The government has still not responded but by last month the museum had raised around SEK11m ($1.5m) from private donations.

On the museum’s website, director Lars Nittve suggests that the government should match private contributions with public funds “krona for krona”.
