As The Art Newspaper went to press, it was reported that the Museum of Modern Art in New York has received a collection of contemporary art from the Los Angeles real estate developer, Edward R. Broida, 71. The 174 works include examples by Vija Celmins and 36 pieces by Philip Guston, including 12 paintings. Ann Temkin, curator in the museum’s department of painting and sculpture, told The New York Times that “the extraordinary quality of Mr Broida’s gift transforms the collection, making it the greatest holdings of Guston in the world.” This month Christie’s New York will auction 14 works from Broida’s collection including Mark Rothko’s Homage to Matisse, 1954, which is expected to sell for between $15 million and $20 million.
