My Basel: Maureen Paley

One of my favourite places is Bodega, a little restaurant near the Kunsthalle. There’s art on the walls and the man who runs it is extremely welcoming to the art world. The menu is very reassuring: things like lamb and vegetables and different sorts of salads. Just what you need after a day at the fair. The other place where everyone congregates is the Kunsthalle restaurant. The restaurant and bar have the most wonderful ornate architecture and everyone ends up there at the end of the night.

For shopping there’s a place called Tres Pommes. Usually at the time of Art Basel they have a sale. There’s an especially good line of Prada.

It’s always a pleasure to go to the Kunsthalle and the Museum fur Gegenwarts-kunst, where they have the most amazing collection of Beuys. You cannot go to Basel without visiting the Schaulager; it’s this remarkable kind of store for art. The mixture of building design and how it works with the collection is very inspirational.
