Miami’s major venue for contemporary art is the Donald and Mera Rubell Family Collection, which currently occupies a 32,000 square foot warehouse space, but is in the middle of a major expansion, which will open next year. While the collection includes important examples of the art of the past 30 years, including works by Charles Ray, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons and others, the emphasis has always been on cutting edge work—indeed, the older works were purchased when they were fresh from the artists’ studios; “the Rubells don’t retrobuy,” says the collection’s director Mark Coetzee. (The Rubells own the Chris Ofili “Virgin Mary” piece that so enraged New York’s mayor during the run of the Sensation exhibition two years ago.) During the run of Art Basel, the collection will be open, before shutting its doors to continue on the expansion project. On view are recent acquisitions; pieces by Maurizio Cattelan (right, his “Not afraid of love”, 2000), Marlene Dumas, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Luc Tuymans, as well as some “room” pieces by Gregor Schneider, one of which was lent to the last Venice Biennale.
