Movin’ on to Chelsea....
This month, 123 Watts gallery moves from lower Soho to 529 West 20th Street, merging with Cristinerose Gallery, currently on the 2nd floor. Josee Bienvenue of 123 Watts will mainly do the contemporary programming, Mariacristina Parravicini of Cristinerose will also deal in the secondary market. Thatcher Projects moves from 529 West 20th to the recently renovated Whitehall Storage Building at 511 West 26th Street, which is quickly filling up with galleries. Renee Ricardo’s Arena gallery, formerly operating out of a various spaces in Brooklyn, opens at 526 West 26th Street, Suite 310, sharing space with gallerist Elga Wimmer; they will alternate exhibitions. Ellen Donahue and Ronald Sosinski, formerly of Donahue/Sosinski at 560 Broadway in Soho, are re-opening, with a space called The Proposition at 162 11th Avenue (at 22nd Street). Mr. Sosinski co-founded the recent hotel fair of emerging art, SCOPE, which took place in May, and appears again in Miami in December. The Proposition has a relationship with Lisson in London. The first show is photographs by Lee Wagstaff, opening on 28 September.
..and to Soho
Moving into 560 Broadway is Peter Freeman, a private dealer in blue-chip contemporary work, who formerly operated out of Brooklyn. He will now share gallery space with his wife, Elizabeth Cunnick, who runs A/D, a gallery devoted to functional art, such as furniture by Donald Judd. A/D and Mr Freeman will alternate shows; Mr. Freeman’s first is of Robert Mangold, opening 12 September. Suite 106, which opened last year in the Milburn Hotel on the Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is moving to 112 Mercer. The first show is Edy Ferguson and Ken Fandell (see What’s On, p.3).
