Seeing Things: photographing objects 1850-2001

Presented in six sections, this exhibition uses famous and lesser known works by a wide range of photographers, including Julia Margaret Cameron, Eugene Atget, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Eggleston, Helen Chadwick as well as prominent younger photographers to look at the different ways in which photographers have used objects to compose memorable images. With examples spanning the whole history of the medium it includes advertising (above, Richard Prince, Untitled, 1983), documentary, fine art and portraiture. Curated by Mark Haworth-Booth, Chief Curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the exhibition (21 February-18 August) is divided into themed sections that examine the various uses of the object in many types and aspects of photography.
