The British Museum has postponed its forthcoming exhibition “Hunt for paradise: court arts of Safavid Iran 1501-76” because the sponsor has pulled out. Their offices were housed in one of New York’s Twin Towers and money must now be diverted to more immediate concerns. The exhibition was scheduled for early 2002 and was to concentrate on the reigns of two shahs, Isma’il, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, and his son, Tahmasp, whose patronage fostered an artistic flowering of great refinement. It is hoped that the exhibition will be held in 2004 or 2005.
