In 1992 the curator and high-profile art dealer Jeffrey Deitch held an exhibition called “Post Human”, bringing to the Castello di Rivoli in Turin the work of a new generation of contemporary artists. The exhibition reflected a prevailing interest at the time in human regeneration based on artifice, cloning and genetic engineering. Deitch’s new exhibition at the Castello, “Form follows fiction” (until 27 January), has a woollier raison d’être (cynics might call it one more attempt to entrench a predictable yet profitable contemporary canon) but it is billed as an attempt to document the ground covered by the artists between that time and now in their analysis of “the human condition”. The twenty artists taking part include Olafur Eliasson, Cai Guo-Qiang, Doug Aitken, Gregory Crewdson, Gabriel Orozco, Kara Walker and Mariko Mori. The video artist and photographer Anna Gaskell, a thirty-two year old American, is the subject of a one-woman show also at the Castello di Rivoli, curated by Marcella Beccaria.
