The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has spent over $250,000 in legal fees in its New York lawsuit contesting the attempted subpoena of two paintings by Egon Schiele loaned to the museum, a spokesperson for MoMA told The Art Newspaper. In September 1999, the New York Court of Appeals definitively quashed the subpoena by which by the New York District Attorney sought to obtain possession of the two Schieles lent to MoMA by the Leopold Foundation in Austria.
