Knoedler donates photo archive to Frick

Knoedler’s & Co. has donated a huge cache of photographs to the Frick Art Reference Library. Knoedler’s director Ann Freedman says the gesture is in part an acknowledgment of the Frick’s assistance in mounting the gallery’s recent sesquicentennial exhibition. According to Inge Reist, the library’s chief of collections, development and research, the Frick’s photo archive is the largest in North America, containing around 900,000 images documenting works by about 50,000 American and European artists, from the sixth to the mid-twentieth century. Ms. Reist notes that the gift is particularly rich in reproductions of works that remain in private hands.
