The annual national conference of the Appraisers’ Association of America is being held at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel from 15 to 17 November with the title: “Trompe l’oeil: to fool the eye and to challenge the appraiser”. It seeks to deal with the perennial problem encountered by the appraiser of identifying fakes and forgeries. One of the key issues under discussion is to what extent the appraiser determines the authenticity of a work of art and how that is achieved. Other areas to be examined include the issue of how clear title is established and how the value is affected if it is not clear. Specialised workshops will look at fakes in areas such as Old Master paintings, ceramics, art nouveau and American furniture. United Airlines, the designated carrier for the conference, is offering discounts of up to ten percent on all fares. Contact the Appraisers Association of America, Inc.+1 212 889 5404.
