Following the recent exhibition of Egyptian depictions of royalty from the Louvre at the Cleveland Museum of Art which attracted 138,000 visitors (see The Art Newspaper, No.56, February 1996, p.10), the Cincinnati Art Museum has organised an Egyptian exhibition of its own. “Mistress of the House, Mistress of Heaven” (20 October-5 January 1997) takes the ever-fashionable role of women in ancient society as its theme, drawing together 200 works from twenty-six American public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Brooklyn Museum. Highlights include a variety of painted gilded and inlaid wooden coffins, portrayals of Hatsheput, Nefertiti and other Egyptian queens, gold, silver and faience jewellery and an audio tour of the show narrated by Madame Jehan Sadat, widow of the former Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, and an active women’s rights campaigner in Egypt for the last twenty years. The exhibition, curated by Anne Capel and Glenn Markoe, is on view at the Brooklyn Museum from 21 February to 18 May 1997.
