Sarah Raphael wins big art prize

She beat out the highest number of applicants to date for the NatWest prize

Sarah Raphael has won the £20,000 NatWest 90s Prize for Art. The artist, aged thirty-five, won with a series of large canvases depicting the Australian outback. Best known for her portraiture, her work can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Second prize was awarded to art student Frances Borden. The prize is now in its fifth year and attracted 686 entries, the highest number to date. The panel of judges was comprised of Lord Gowrie, Arts Council Chairman; Godfrey Barker, journalist; Olivier Berggruen, dealer; Timothy Clifford, director, National Gallery of Scotland; Alexander Guy, artist and teacher; Diarmud Kelley, 1995 winner of the prize; David Lee, arts editor; and Anthony Mould, dealer.
