Correction: Michael Ward Gallery

An amendment to an article published in the March issue of The Art Newspaper (No. 57, p.26), with our apologies

An article published in the March issue of The Art Newspaper (No. 57, p.26) with regard to the return of a hoard of Mycenean objects, contained a number of inaccuracies. Specifically the article referred to a “hearing” in which it was proved that the objects were stolen and illegally exported, and to a “ruling” which stated that they should be returned to Greece. In fact, the issue did not go to court but was settled beforehand by the two parties, New York dealer Michael Ward and the Republic of Greece. Under the terms of the settlement the Michael Ward Gallery donated the objects to the Society for the Preservation of Greek Heritage, a charitable foundation based in Washington DC. We apologise to Mr Ward for any confusion or embarrassment which our article may have caused.
