The exhibition devoted to sculpture by Alexander Calder from private collections held at the Royal Academy, London, in 1992 attracted a healthy 63,147 visitors. Picking up on this interest in an artist whose works are not widely represented in British public collections, William Beadleston Inc of New York are holding an exhibition at 13 Mason’s Yard in association with Susanna Allen Fine Art (7 June to 1 July).
A selling exhibition, based on the gallery’s stock, it will have around fifteen works including five or six mobiles, a couple of stabiles and some table pieces. Most of the works date from the 1940s and 50s and include important pieces such as “Red Disc” of 1947. Ms Allen explained that in addition to the US and France, Calder’s reputation was particularly strong in Brazil where his work was promoted by an architect, who recommended to clients that they install his pieces in their new homes. Three Calders have been bought directly by Beadleston from their original Brazilian owners.
