Berlin

Born in 1912 into an influential Berlin family, he left for America in 1938 and taught at the University of Chicago until 1957. In 1964 he returned to Germany and held a senior post at the Freie Universität in Berlin where he skilfully parried the more unreasonable of student demands through the turbulent Sixties and Seventies. His publication "The Gothic cathedral" stands with those of Panofsky and Sedlmayr, while he also worked on Rubens and German nineteenth-century painting. His concerns included the future of the East German universities and of the Berlin museums.
