William S. Paley, founder of the CBS communications group, who died on 26 October, has left his collection to the New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Ownership of the works will remain in the hands of a foundation for tax reasons.
This is one of the largest bequests the museum has ever received: eighty-four paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, including Cézanne’s “Estaque”, “Washerwomen in Arles” by Gauguin and three Picassos, one of which “Boy leading a horse” is a masterpiece of his Pink Period. Also represented are Toulouse-Lautrec, Derain, Vuillard and Rouault.
The Picassos were part of the estate of Gertrude Stein and were acquired by Paley in 1968.
The museum is planning to present the bequest in a special exhibition.
