The season at the Fundació Caixa de Pensions opens with and the mixture of bold colours and oriental abstraction that has brought success to the English painter Howard Hodgkin.
The latter is the subject of a retrospective, co-produced with the British Council, which opens on 1 October.
It includes about thirty paintings from the decade between 1979 and 1989, plus an extensive collection of drawings.
This will be followed by an exhibition opening on 4 December to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Vuillard.
The career of Edouard Vuillard, from his beginnings in Nabis to his rise to fame, will be reconstructed using one hundred and twenty works, including drawings and engravings. 1991 will see the opening, on 11 February, of “Passage de l’Image”, a look at trends in art that make use of electronic or other media, including video, photography, cinema and multi-media installations.
The pieces chosen include works by Robert Adams, Gary Hill, Suzanne Lafont, Chris Marker and Bill Viola.
Finally, starting on 15 April, there will be an exhibition covering nearly a century of American photography, from Anselm Adams to Walker Ewans and through to Wegman and Heinecken. The 250 prints come from the Center of Creative Photography at Tucson University, Arizona. The exhibition is also expected to make a stop at the Fundació’s Madrid headquarters.
